About MBST®

Key facts regarding MBST® therapy.

What is  MBST®?

MBST® is a non invasive, game-changing treatment, specialising in reducing pain and swelling and improving mobility.

MBST® has been successfully applied to the following conditions:
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Osteoporosis
  • Muscle, Ligament and Tendon Damage & Pain
  • Sports and Accident Injuries
  • Bruised Bones

Innovative Technology

MBST® therapy is a technological innovation used to counteract the negative effects of degenerative disorders of the musculoskeletal system such as arthritis.

The principle of MBST® technology is based on the use of nuclear resonance, electromagnetic fields, originally used for MRI diagnosis. Unlike MRI, MBST® does not use magnetic resonance to generate images, but rather to biophysically stimulate the regenerative processes of specific cells or tissues at a molecular level.

Once the cells of the affected area or injury have been sufficiently stimulated from MBST® therapy, the cells will continue to grow and develop by themselves.

20 years in Operation

MBST® was established in Germany and has been in operation for 20 years.  It offers a comfortable, uncomplicated and sustainable therapy.  In several cases MBST® has eliminated the need for surgery. It is user-friendly and easy to implement and is effective on patients of all ages.

From the initial diagnosis through to aftercare, every patient is fully supported throughout the entire process by healthcare professionals and trained technicians. MBST® is completely stress-free - during therapy, there is little to do but lay back and let MBST® work for you. Most patients bring a book, listen to music, or just take a nap during the hour of comfortable therapy.

MBST® Requires:
  • No surgery
  • No medication
  • No intravenous infusions

The Science of MBST®

Read up on the technical aspects of MBST® therapy.

Innovative Medical Technology

Developed by the German company MedTec, MBST® magnetic resonance therapy is the result of scientifically proven knowledge and technological expertise with the power of medical innovation, created to address the degenerative effects of musculoskeletal disorders.

MBST® Therapy Sequences

The therapeutic use of magnetic resonance technology is based on interdisciplinary research and development work. MedTec was supported in designing relevant tissue parameters by the Institute for Nuclear Physics at the University of Giessen and the Laboratory for Medical and Molecular Biology at the University of Applied Sciences in Aachen. The acquired data was used to develop therapeutically usable magnetic resonance sequences. Following a successful practical test phase, the first MBST® magnetic resonance therapy device came onto the market in 1998 and has been successfully utilised in medical practices, health centres, hospitals and clinics around the world.

MBST® as an International Therapy Standard

Characterising technological progress, innovation and quality medical technology, MBST® aims to establish magnetic resonance therapy as one of the conservative standard therapies used for treating the causes of degenerative diseases of the musculoskeletal system and bone metabolism disorders. The efficacy and tolerability of MBST® magnetic resonance technology in treating many diseases of the musculoskeletal system and any associated discomfort is confirmed by meaningful data from numerous studies and publications. Globally Recognised Approvals and Certificates MBST is patented, accredited and in compliance with the current 93/42/EEC Directive of the European Union.

MBST’s® Effect on the Circadian Rhythm

Chronobiologists identified the significance of the Circadian Rhythm * on health. Important biological processes, including cell regeneration are enhanced considerably when the rhythm runs smoothly. (This research won the Nobel prize for medicine in 2017)

Throughout life, external factors can influence and destabilise the circadian rhythm which can in turn diminish our body’s ability to heal itself with cell regeneration.

However MBST® technology has demonstrated an active influence on the inner clockwork of cells reprogramming the body to find the natural rhythm of its younger self. In a given joint or limb, it can create an environment conducive to natural healing.

In this way MBST® is the only treatment that has been shown to directly stimulate the body’s regenerative processes at molecular level.

* The Circadian Rhythm - your body’s internal process that regulates sleep-wake cycles.

The MBST® Approach

An active approach in the treatment of degenerative diseases.

An Overview of the MBST® Approach

MBST® therapy has an active approach in the treatment of degenerative diseases. In acute injuries, MBST® is used for its anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving effects and to actively accelerate healing processes. It is also an optimal supplement in post-surgical, post-in-patient and rehabilitation accompanying treatment strategies for all aspects of the musculoskeletal system.

MBST® Approach for the Treatment of Osteoarthritis

The metabolism is the basis of all vital body processes and requires a lot of energy. This energy is also needed in cartilage tissue to form, preserve and repair. If the cartilage cells lack energy, endogenous repair mechanisms can no longer be performed and cartilage degeneration occurs.

Chondrocytes of various sizes, shapes and metabolic activity are found in different zones of hyaline cartilage. Each chondrocyte is responsible for maintaining the extracellular matrix and metabolism in its direct vicinity. Defects in the articular cartilage affect the repair mechanism due to insufficient matrix metabolism. For this reason, the cartilage cells must increase their metabolism to keep the ECM metabolism going. In the degenerative arthritic process, the chondrocytes can no longer compensate for the degenerated cartilage and this can result in an irreparable and complete loss of the cartilage layer. This is where magnetic resonance therapy can be applied successfully. The MBST® therapy system has been developed to transfer energy to the cartilaginous tissue in a targeted manner. The objective is to increase the metabolism and thereby re-trigger the body’s own repair mechanisms and regeneration processes. MBST® therapy directly tackles one of the causes of osteoarthritis.

MBST® Approach for the Treatment of Osteoporosis

Bone tissue also needs a lot of energy. The bone undergoes a continuous transformation to maintain its structure and function (bone remodelling). To keep the bone mass constant, osteoclasts resorb bone tissue and osteoblasts rebuild it. If this is not regulated properly, increased bone degeneration (high turnover) or decreased bone metabolism (low turnover) can result in a loss of bone matter. The active therapy approach of MBST® aims at a reduction of bone breakdown and a stimulation of bone build-up. The osteo therapy sequences were developed to enable a targeted energy transfer into the bone tissue. The aim is an increased metabolism and a renewed activation of repair mechanisms in respect of the regeneration processes. MBST therapy thus directly tackles one of the causes of osteoporosis.

MBST® Approach for the Treatment of Intervertebral Disc Conditions

Just like any other part of the body, over the course of time your intervertebral discs will be affected by the ageing process. Like wrinkles appearing on your skin, the discs in your spine will degenerate too. In some people, this common degenerative process will lead to pain and stiffness, and in some cases, where damage occurs further, surgery may be required. Conventionally, intervertebral discs suffer from poor blood supply which impairs healing. However, MBST® can help by transferring energy in a targeted manner to the tissue of the intervertebral discs. This energy stimulates the metabolism of the respective cells to trigger the body’s own repair mechanisms and regeneration processes.  Rather than purely following a symptomatic treatment approach, MBST® focuses on the cause of the issue and encourages cellular proliferation. It can reduce pain, increase mobility and hopefully prevent the need for surgery.

MBST® Approach for the Treatment of Sports Injuries

Molecular biological wound healing processes are complex and interminable. Months can pass until a muscle, tendon or ligament injury has healed completely because the repair and regeneration processes are very slow due to the sedate metabolism of the damaged tissues.

This is where the MBST® magnetic resonance technology finds its use. The targeted energy transfer to damaged tissue is intended to stimulate the metabolism of cells as well as to trigger and promote the body’s own repair mechanisms or regeneration processes in order to shorten healing processes in a sustainable way. The objective of the MBST® therapy is to enable fast but also safe return to training, competition and work. Thanks to an accelerated resumption of activities, downtimes can be significantly shortened.

"When I was told I could lie down for a few hours, listen to my audiobook, feel nothing, and my ever-sore elbows would become free of pain, I thought it was likely too good to be true. A career in rugby battered my poor joints, yet they now feel like new. I actually can’t believe it. Shoulders next please!"

David Flatman - Ex England Rugby Player

What our patients say

Some of our recent patient testimonials:

Steve Dickinson - 55 years
"MBST has been well worth the journey"

I’ve had knee pain for 30 years, had 5 arthroscopies and minor knee surgery. Diagnosed with juvenile arthritis at 25, I now have moderate arthritis and had been told I need a total knee replacement, which I don’t want at 55yrs old. MBST has been well worth the journey - I have now had about 20 rounds of golf with hardly any pain and I am looking forward to hitting the slopes again in the winter! Well worth the money and service! Thank you

Ed, hamstring tear
"I will 100% be using MBST® for any future injuries!"

I had a fantastic experience at the At The Core clinic. I had been diagnosed with a grade 2b hamstring tear which after having a scan I was advised was a 5-6 week injury. After using the ‘MBST®’ therapy machine I was back out running on the pitch after 1 week and back fully training and match ready after 3 weeks! The treatment was non invasive and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to speed up their recovery process and get back to fitness as soon as possible.

Shaun Bentey - 47 years
"Before MBST life was very restrictive"

Before MBST life was very restrictive and I was relying on pain killers and unable to take part in activities.
Although the pain levels appear not to have reduced too much, this is now without pain killers. It has also allowed me to start getting out more and enjoying time with family.
I’m only 3 months post treatment, but I'm already getting more of my life back than any operations in the past 5 years.

Frequently asked questions

What does the MBST® treatment process involve?

The MBST® system is composed of the MBST® therapy devices and indication-specific MBST® therapy cards. The therapy card is selected according to a medical diagnosis.

Patient-specific treatment data is stored on the MBST® therapy card and then transferred to the control module. The card simply has to be inserted into the therapy device. The patient is asked to remove their shoes and is positioned comfortably in the treatment field, then the therapy session is started. Most patients bring a book, listen to music, or just take a nap during the hour of stress-free treatment.

The MBST® therapy device establishes magnetic resonance conditions with the tissue to be treated and initiates the targeted energy transmission using the MBST® therapy sequence.

The duration of the course depends on the diagnosis and the severity of the condition.  Each therapy session lasts for 60 minutes and a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 9 therapy sessions per treatment block are recommended.

What should I expect after MBST® treatment?

Aftercare is a vital step in the journey to a successful recovery, so we make sure you receive full support from our physiotherapist throughout the entire process. Upon completing your MBST® treatment you will need to attend 3 post-therapy review sessions so that we can be fully satisfied that you’re on the right road to recovery.  These are included in the package price. We recommend post-treatment assessments at the end of treatment, at 6 weeks and at 12 weeks, depending on the outcome.

In order to get the full and desired effect from your MBST® treatment, it is vital that you keep drinking plenty of water on a daily basis for 6 weeks. It is also important that you do NOT place any unnecessary strain on the treated area for 10 weeks after therapy, but do keep it as mobile as possible and follow any advice that we have given you, such as the patient specific exercises. Natural active movements at home and at work will help to gradually reduce stiffness, strengthen the muscles and give you back your confidence.

Please follow our physiotherapy instructions:
It is an important part of the healing process to strengthen the muscles around the joints and spinal areas, so please perform the exercises assigned to you.

Recovery Can Take up to 10 Weeks:
Please be patient with the healing process. MBST® works at a cellular level and every person’s progress is different. If your body responds slower than expected, don’t lose hope, you’re already well on your way.

What if the pain comes back?

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition so no treatment, including MBST® therapy, can 100% guarantee full recovery.  While we do expect to excite the healing process there may be several reasons for future degeneration, such as lifestyle, genetics, past injury, diet, too little or not enough exercise. Fortunately, many of these factors are within your control, so to get the most out of your therapy you should strive for a healthy and active lifestyle.

Do I need a referral?

No, although you can only begin a course of MBST® once a condition has been diagnosed and the appropriate treatment recommended.  A diagnosis can be obtained directly from At The Core by making an appointment with our physiotherapist.

We will also accept a referral from a doctor or a consultant but you will still need an assessment from At The Core in order to assess a suitable course of therapy.   Call 01225 461205 to make an appointment with our physiotherapist for a consultation.

What are the side effects of MBST® therapy?

There have been no reported side effects of MBST® therapy since it was first applied internationally in 1998.

Will I immediately feel better after treatment?

Though there are different effect ranges for different conditions, for instance spinal disc pathologies can take up to 10 weeks to see consistent improvement, whilst osteoporosis and osteoarthritis are degenerative conditions and so takes time to be counteracted. Studies show in more than 80% of cases pain was significantly reduced after 3-5 sessions and patients reported associated improved mobility.

How long does the effect of the MBST® therapy last, and can the treatment be repeated?

After MBST® has been undertaken, additional MBST® should not be necessary unless a new injury is sustained or pathology discovered, in which case the therapy can be repeated any number of times. The healing process continues beyond the conclusion of the treatment and patient data shows that significant pain reduction could be verified years after the therapy. Patient data from the treatment of osteoporosis shows a significant increase in bone density one year after treatment. While MBST treatment can be repeated any number of times, and some patients do undertake top ups 6 months or a year later, the need for top ups is uncommon.

Will I need to take medication?

MBST® therapy requires no drugs, painkillers, injections, intravenous infusions or medication of any kind. Your own GP will advise you on whether or not they consider medication a necessity in your individual case.

What does Jonathan Webb - Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon MB ChB FRCS (Orth)  have to say about MBST® Therapy?

I’m delighted to see this exciting new technology made available in Bath through the good work of Paul and his team. MBST® has already been shown to produce significant improvements in pain and activity in patients treated in centres throughout Europe. Used in conjunction with a rehabilitation programme it can get patients back to sport when surgery or medication has little to offer.

Is the effectiveness of MBST® therapy proven by studies?

The effectiveness and tolerability of the therapy when applied to many diseases and complaints of the musculoskeletal system (and their associated discomforts and impairments) are confirmed by meaningful data from numerous studies, specialist publications and peer-reviewed journals. For a comprehensive list of publications, or to read the full peer-reviewed journals and other published studies, please email info@thecore.health.

What about implants

Active implants such as pacemakers, defibrillation (ICDs) and pain or insulin pumps require an individual assessment by a physician before suitability for MBST® therapy can be confirmed. At The Core will supply patients with technical information relating to MBST® therapy, however due to GDPR legislation, patients with active implants must obtain their own written confirmation for suitability of treatment from their independent medical practitioner. At The Core clinics require sight of written consent from the patient’s medical practitioner, prior to booking a course of MBST® treatment.

Breast implants, contraceptive implants and prosthetics are regarded safe in connection with MBST® therapy, in the same way that they are compatible with an MRI scanner.  At The Core physiotherapists always advise that you consult a medical expert ahead of booking treatment and in the case of non-active implants and prosthetics, written consent may be requested prior to booking a course of MBST® treatment.

Why are there price differences between different MBST® clinics?

At The Core clinics use the most up to date MBST® technology in delivering MBST® magnetic resonance therapy.  The Arthro Spin Flex and Arthro Spin Lift devices generate an optimal magnetic resonance field of very high treatment quality compared with lower generation devices.  Additionally, the Arthro range of MBST® devices are designed for use in nerve, post-surgical and would treatments. Please consider the advanced technology and high quality treatment that the Arthro range of MBST® therapy devices deliver when comparing treatment prices at other clinics.
